Narrative:
In cruise at FL370; 90 NM east of salt lake city; the #1 engine surged then popped; followed very rapidly by engine rotation slow down and rapid rise in engine egt. Captain requested engine driftdown qrc; followed by the severe engine qrc. While I was accomplishing these checklists; the captain contacted dispatch and informed them of the situation and the diversion plan then the same information with the cabin crew. ATC clearance was requested for descent and to salt lake city via radar vectors for approach to runway 16R; where an uneventful landing was made. All checklists and single engine procedures were accomplished in accordance with the B777 flight manual. After landing and clearing the runway; the brakes were set and fire personnel inspected aircraft before taxiing to gate. Crew member and fire personnel were debriefed after the flight. The slc airport fire department had the ability to listen to tower and the air crew on the VHF radio and were able to hear the crew's request to inspect the left engine and aircraft for any leaking fluids and any additional fire indications. Supplemental information from acn 704671: talked to cabin crew. Had them visually inspect the engine and put them on an advisory.
