Narrative:
Clearance was to FL320; direct lit J180 swb for arrival to houston. Aircraft was on autoplt with navigation engaged and performance climb of approximately 2500 FPM. Center called us as we began turn to join J180 and told us we turned too early and assigned a heading 15 degrees right; radar vectors for climb. The FMS was leading the intercept of J180; approximately a 70 degree turn; so as not to overshoot and fly through the outbound airway. Center had no further comment and did not mention any traffic conflicts.
