Narrative:

Before taxi; the first officer and I both read the teb 5 departure from runway 24. Upon taxi out we again briefed the SID as 'departure runway 24 runway heading to 4.5 DME from teb VOR. At 4.5 DME turn heading 280 degrees begin the climb from 1500 ft to 2000 ft.' the departure actually reads climb to 1500 ft turn heading 280 degrees then at 4.5 DME climb to 2000 ft. At 2.4 DME; ny departure gave us a turn west bound; so with the misinterpreted SID; I began to climb to 2000 ft. ATC questioned the climb; but took no further action.
