Narrative:

Our clearance was kennedy 9 canarsie climb neion as filed; runway 31L. During the takeoff brief; I briefed the first officer about the kennedy 9 departure canarsie climb. I stated I would hand fly with the flight director in green data; at 400 ft AGL turn left direct canarsie and at cri; station passage; I would turn left; intercept and fly outbound on the cri 176 degree radial and climb to 5000 ft. All radios were verified set for departure and I was in green data with 122.3 in VOR #1. A VOR check had been completed on jul/xa/06 (dual ground cvg) with +/-1 results. I completed the takeoff from runway 31L in green data with the flight director in takeoff mode. Speed mode was selected after takeoff. At 400 ft AGL; I started a left turn direct cri. The course needle was centered to cri and navigation mode selected. We turned within 4.0 DME jfk using a distance ring on the fix function at the FMS. With wind correction I was flying approximately 230-235 degree heading direct cri. As soon as VOR #1 went into 'dr' mode (with dr on the FMA); I held my heading anticipating station passage and asked the first officer to dial 176 degree radial on the VOR #1 course knob. As the first officer was dialing the 176 degree radial; new york departure told us to turn immediately to a 180 degree heading to avoid lga airspace. VOR #1 was still indicating to cri but I turned immediately to a 180 degree heading as instructed. Departure then asked what departure we were given. The first officer responded kennedy 9 canarsie climb. Departure then gave us a turn to 090 degrees. We were handed off to the next departure controller and received 1 or 2 more vectors towards the north; then cleared direct neion on course to buf. While on vectors and before we were cleared direct neion; the first officer and I both again verified VOR #1 was set correctly and operational and cri was in the DME identify. After the event it seemed VOR #1 was late to indicate station passage. In the future; I will ensure the climb checklist does not interfere with both pilots monitoring the navigation and include that in my takeoff brief. Supplemental information from acn 705503: we received kennedy 9 departure with the canarsie climb. We departed jfk after briefing the departure procedure and verifying the cri VOR was on the captain's side and the captain was in green data. We departed behind a heavy B767; correctly turned toward canarsie VOR within 4.5 DME of jfk per the procedure. I visually verified his turn and tracking toward the VOR and then became involved with climb; check procedures and radio switching. Then the captain requested his VOR be tuned to 176 degree radial outbound on cri VOR and at this point I turned his course select switch to the 176 degree radial outbound. Departure asked for an immediate 180 degree turn. We complied immediately. We were then told to fly a 090 degree heading and continued on course after that. I believe we may have turned to the 176 degree heading a few seconds late. The captain said he carefully flew the procedure but was waiting for VOR station passage before turning and was surprised when ATC gave us the 'immediate 180 degree turn.' I'm unsure if we were off much in our navigation. This was a high workload period right after takeoff with a somewhat complex departure procedure. In retrospect; I should have visually monitored the captain's flying of the departure procedure more carefully instead of becoming distraction with the climb check and radio tuning.

Narrative: OUR CLRNC WAS KENNEDY 9 CANARSIE CLB NEION AS FILED; RWY 31L. DURING THE TKOF BRIEF; I BRIEFED THE FO ABOUT THE KENNEDY 9 DEP CANARSIE CLB. I STATED I WOULD HAND FLY WITH THE FLT DIRECTOR IN GREEN DATA; AT 400 FT AGL TURN L DIRECT CANARSIE AND AT CRI; STATION PASSAGE; I WOULD TURN L; INTERCEPT AND FLY OUTBOUND ON THE CRI 176 DEG RADIAL AND CLB TO 5000 FT. ALL RADIOS WERE VERIFIED SET FOR DEP AND I WAS IN GREEN DATA WITH 122.3 IN VOR #1. A VOR CHK HAD BEEN COMPLETED ON JUL/XA/06 (DUAL GND CVG) WITH +/-1 RESULTS. DEP THEN GAVE US A TURN TO 090 DEGS. WE WERE HANDED OFF TO THE NEXT DEP CTLR AND RECEIVED 1 OR 2 MORE VECTORS TOWARDS THE N; THEN CLRED DIRECT NEION ON COURSE TO BUF. WHILE ON VECTORS AND BEFORE WE WERE CLRED DIRECT NEION; THE FO AND I BOTH AGAIN VERIFIED VOR #1 WAS SET CORRECTLY AND OPERATIONAL AND CRI WAS IN THE DME IDENT. AFTER THE EVENT IT SEEMED VOR #1 WAS LATE TO INDICATE STATION PASSAGE. IN THE FUTURE; I WILL ENSURE THE CLB CHKLIST DOES NOT INTERFERE WITH BOTH PLTS MONITORING THE NAV AND INCLUDE THAT IN MY TKOF BRIEF. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 705503: WE RECEIVED KENNEDY 9 DEP WITH THE CANARSIE CLB. WE DEPARTED JFK AFTER BRIEFING THE DEP PROC AND VERIFYING THE CRI VOR WAS ON THE CAPT'S SIDE AND THE CAPT WAS IN GREEN DATA. DEP ASKED FOR AN IMMEDIATE 180 DEG TURN. WE COMPLIED IMMEDIATELY. WE WERE THEN TOLD TO FLY A 090 DEG HDG AND CONTINUED ON COURSE AFTER THAT. I BELIEVE WE MAY HAVE TURNED TO THE 176 DEG HDG A FEW SECONDS LATE. THE CAPT SAID HE CAREFULLY FLEW THE PROC BUT WAS WAITING FOR VOR STATION PASSAGE BEFORE TURNING AND WAS SURPRISED WHEN ATC GAVE US THE 'IMMEDIATE 180 DEG TURN.' I'M UNSURE IF WE WERE OFF MUCH IN OUR NAV. THIS WAS A HIGH WORKLOAD PERIOD RIGHT AFTER TKOF WITH A SOMEWHAT COMPLEX DEP PROC. IN RETROSPECT; I SHOULD HAVE VISUALLY MONITORED THE CAPT'S FLYING OF THE DEP PROC MORE CAREFULLY INSTEAD OF BECOMING DISTR WITH THE CLB CHK AND RADIO TUNING.
