Narrative:
In cruise flight; with the APU off; we got an 'APU detent inoperative' light. Applied flight manual procedure and then sent a maintenance report. Approximately 10 mins later; got a fire bell associated with the APU fire handle illuminated. Handled in accordance with flight manual -- pulled and turned to release extinguishing agent. Handle stayed illuminated until over airport -- diverted to airport that had good WX; was close and familiar to both I and the captain. Declared emergency; company notified via ATC and aircraft prepared for evacuate/evacuation. With the light out; decided not to evacuate/evacuation. Had crash fire rescue equipment crew waiting at rollout for any signs of fire. None noted. All checklists and procedures were done in accordance with proper operating techniques. Flight attendants did an excellent job for short notice preparation! All passenger deplaned through normal means with no injuries.
