Narrative:
During approach to landing at ZZZ1 I suddenly noticed a boat traveling roughly perpendicular to my direction of flight; and on a collision course with the aircraft. I pulled up and applied power but contacted the roof of the boat with the right float of the aircraft. I flew the aircraft to ZZZ2 and landed. There were no injuries to the occupants of the aircraft or the boat. The roof of the boat and the right float of the aircraft were damaged. Contributing factors include limited visibility in the landing attitude; boat traffic density in the harbor; and my lack of experience in this type of operation. A human performance consideration is that the boat was observed earlier in the approach; but was not perceived to be a threat.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A DHC-2 FLOAT PLANE'S R FLOAT CONTACTED A BOAT'S ROOF DURING A WATER LNDG. ACFT WAS RETURNED FOR A FIELD LNDG.
Narrative: DURING APCH TO LNDG AT ZZZ1 I SUDDENLY NOTICED A BOAT TRAVELING ROUGHLY PERPENDICULAR TO MY DIRECTION OF FLT; AND ON A COLLISION COURSE WITH THE ACFT. I PULLED UP AND APPLIED POWER BUT CONTACTED THE ROOF OF THE BOAT WITH THE RIGHT FLOAT OF THE ACFT. I FLEW THE ACFT TO ZZZ2 AND LANDED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO THE OCCUPANTS OF THE ACFT OR THE BOAT. THE ROOF OF THE BOAT AND THE R FLOAT OF THE ACFT WERE DAMAGED. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS INCLUDE LIMITED VISIBILITY IN THE LNDG ATTITUDE; BOAT TFC DENSITY IN THE HARBOR; AND MY LACK OF EXPERIENCE IN THIS TYPE OF OP. A HUMAN PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATION IS THAT THE BOAT WAS OBSERVED EARLIER IN THE APCH; BUT WAS NOT PERCEIVED TO BE A THREAT.
