Narrative:

All engine indications were normal during takeoff and initial climb out. Upon setting climb thrust at 10000 ft; the left engine started to surge. The N1 and N2 were surging +/-1%. The fuel flow was about +/-120 pounds. The first officer was PF and I was PNF. I called maintenance and conferred with them. Upon further review; maintenance advised me that they would like us to return to cvg. On the return to cvg; I reduced the thrust on the left engine to reduce the surging. The surging stopped at about N1; 76-77% and N2; 86%. I advised ATC of the situation and told them it was a non emergency. I also decided against shutting down the engine due to the fact that the engine was operating normally. I talked to the flight attendant and told her that everything was ok and explained what the situation was with the engine. I then made a PA explaining the situation to the passenger. I then coordination the return with operations in cvg. We landed without further incident. We switched aircraft with one at the next gate. We departed without further incident.

Title: A CRJ-200 EXPERIENCED L ENG SURGING CLBING OUT OF CVG. CAPT REDUCED THRUST TO MINIMIZE SURGING AND RETURNED TO CVG.

Narrative: ALL ENG INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL DURING TKOF AND INITIAL CLBOUT. UPON SETTING CLB THRUST AT 10000 FT; THE L ENG STARTED TO SURGE. THE N1 AND N2 WERE SURGING +/-1%. THE FUEL FLOW WAS ABOUT +/-120 LBS. THE FO WAS PF AND I WAS PNF. I CALLED MAINT AND CONFERRED WITH THEM. UPON FURTHER REVIEW; MAINT ADVISED ME THAT THEY WOULD LIKE US TO RETURN TO CVG. ON THE RETURN TO CVG; I REDUCED THE THRUST ON THE L ENG TO REDUCE THE SURGING. THE SURGING STOPPED AT ABOUT N1; 76-77% AND N2; 86%. I ADVISED ATC OF THE SITUATION AND TOLD THEM IT WAS A NON EMER. I ALSO DECIDED AGAINST SHUTTING DOWN THE ENG DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE ENG WAS OPERATING NORMALLY. I TALKED TO THE FLT ATTENDANT AND TOLD HER THAT EVERYTHING WAS OK AND EXPLAINED WHAT THE SITUATION WAS WITH THE ENG. I THEN MADE A PA EXPLAINING THE SITUATION TO THE PAX. I THEN COORD THE RETURN WITH OPS IN CVG. WE LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. WE SWITCHED ACFT WITH ONE AT THE NEXT GATE. WE DEPARTED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
