Narrative:
On this date; a professional maintenance facility at san marcos airport reviewed my aircraft records in preparation for a potential sale of the aircraft. At that time; it was discovered that the registration number of the aircraft had been changed a number of yrs ago (over 10). While the registration certificate reflects the new n-numbers painted on the aircraft; the airworthiness certificate was never updated to reflect the new assigned number. Apparently this condition has existed throughout 2 previous ownerships; as well as my own. Technically; the aircraft has been flown illegally; since the airworthiness certificate must show the correct n-number. Since discovery; I have halted any further flts in the aircraft; and will contact the nearest FAA FSDO to correct the issue. In the future; I will be more careful to check the registration number on the airworthiness certificate to ensure that it agrees with the registration certificate.
