Narrative:
Proceeded to lfpg via deauville 4W(DVL4W) page 20-2N. FMC programmed for runway 27L. Approximately 5 mi prior to merue intersection; degaulle approach advised landing would be on runway 26R. With autoplt on; first officer selected runway 26R on FMC. Believing that the airplane had followed the wrong magenta line after merue; the first officer intervened with heading select and turned the airplane south to follow another course that seemed more logical for the south parallel runway operation of runway 26L. In actuality; the first officer was following the magenta line for the missed approach procedure in reverse. Reference to 'RNAV arrival procedures' page 2-2x3 as opposed to the dvl 4W 'RNAV arrs' would have aided in our understanding. Degaulle approach questioned our turn and cleared us direct to crl to complete the procedure. I apologized for the error. A combination of my return to the cockpit shortly after my rest break; an initial procedure that requires reference to a second procedure; numerous notes and fine print; and foreign accents led to this mistake.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B767-300 FO CONFUSED BY THE NAV DISPLAY LINES AND BELIEVING THE FMS WAS IN ERROR; USED HDG SELECT TO ERRONEOUSLY REMOVE THE ACFT FROM THE RNAV ARR.
Narrative: PROCEEDED TO LFPG VIA DEAUVILLE 4W(DVL4W) PAGE 20-2N. FMC PROGRAMMED FOR RWY 27L. APPROX 5 MI PRIOR TO MERUE INTXN; DEGAULLE APCH ADVISED LNDG WOULD BE ON RWY 26R. WITH AUTOPLT ON; FO SELECTED RWY 26R ON FMC. BELIEVING THAT THE AIRPLANE HAD FOLLOWED THE WRONG MAGENTA LINE AFTER MERUE; THE FO INTERVENED WITH HDG SELECT AND TURNED THE AIRPLANE S TO FOLLOW ANOTHER COURSE THAT SEEMED MORE LOGICAL FOR THE S PARALLEL RWY OP OF RWY 26L. IN ACTUALITY; THE FO WAS FOLLOWING THE MAGENTA LINE FOR THE MISSED APCH PROC IN REVERSE. REF TO 'RNAV ARR PROCS' PAGE 2-2X3 AS OPPOSED TO THE DVL 4W 'RNAV ARRS' WOULD HAVE AIDED IN OUR UNDERSTANDING. DEGAULLE APCH QUESTIONED OUR TURN AND CLRED US DIRECT TO CRL TO COMPLETE THE PROC. I APOLOGIZED FOR THE ERROR. A COMBINATION OF MY RETURN TO THE COCKPIT SHORTLY AFTER MY REST BREAK; AN INITIAL PROC THAT REQUIRES REF TO A SECOND PROC; NUMEROUS NOTES AND FINE PRINT; AND FOREIGN ACCENTS LED TO THIS MISTAKE.
