Narrative:

I was the PNF on a trip from teb. We departed on runway 24 on the teb 5 departure. We were cleared via the departure procedure to climb runway heading to 1500 ft then turn right to heading 280 degrees; maintain 1500 ft till passing the teb 4.5 DME then climb and maintain 2000 ft. After turning to 280 degrees; the captain continued the climb prior to the 4.5 DME. I called 'watch your altitude.' the aircraft reached approximately 1700 ft before a correction back to 1500 ft was initiated. New york approach called us on the deviation and I replied that 'we were correcting.' no TCAS warnings were received.
