Narrative:

During preflight; my first officer was distraction by crc failure messages coming up as we procured the digital ATIS and performed other preflight functions with the ACARS. As a result we ran the before starting engines checklist and pushed off the gate normally without receiving an ACARS ATC clearance to position. The oversight was not discovered till we took off and departure control asked us to squawk our discrete transponder code. So we had mistakenly departed without our ACARS ATC clearance. We then discussed later how to avoid this happening again by adding it to the preflight cardboard checklist and insisting on getting a clearance prior to checking the route in the FMC. I also told my first officer to recommend we stop or defer the checklist in the future till we receive our clearance. Thanks for taking the recommendations.
