Narrative:
Maintenance controller called us at ZZZ and reported that air carrier X inbound flight had received a #4 brake replacement at ZZZ1. B757 brake installation requires an rii (required FAA inspection item) inspection. Technician notified ZZZ that a confirmation check was accomplished; not an rii. Air carrier X would be grounded until an rii inspection of #4 brake installation was accomplished. Inspected #4 main brake assembly per maintenance manual 32-41-10-4 and gpm section 18-01; appendix a chapter 32; paragraph 1F. Apparently the mechanic that originally performed the rii inspection was or is not rii qualified; requiring a re-inspection of the #4 brake rod installation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757-200 WAS DISPATCHED WITH #4 BRAKE REPLACED PER THE BRAKE REPLACEMENT JOB CARD. REQUIRED FAA INSPECTION WAS NOT ACCOMPLISHED. COMPLETED AT DOWNLINE STATION.
Narrative: MAINT CTLR CALLED US AT ZZZ AND RPTED THAT ACR X INBOUND FLT HAD RECEIVED A #4 BRAKE REPLACEMENT AT ZZZ1. B757 BRAKE INSTALLATION REQUIRES AN RII (REQUIRED FAA INSPECTION ITEM) INSPECTION. TECHNICIAN NOTIFIED ZZZ THAT A CONFIRMATION CHK WAS ACCOMPLISHED; NOT AN RII. ACR X WOULD BE GNDED UNTIL AN RII INSPECTION OF #4 BRAKE INSTALLATION WAS ACCOMPLISHED. INSPECTED #4 MAIN BRAKE ASSEMBLY PER MAINT MANUAL 32-41-10-4 AND GPM SECTION 18-01; APPENDIX A CHAPTER 32; PARAGRAPH 1F. APPARENTLY THE MECH THAT ORIGINALLY PERFORMED THE RII INSPECTION WAS OR IS NOT RII QUALIFIED; REQUIRING A RE-INSPECTION OF THE #4 BRAKE ROD INSTALLATION.
