Narrative:
At approximately XA30 on sep/sat/06; I was asked to get on a flight to ZZZ to investigate an in-flight engine shutdown of an airline's aircraft. Upon arriving at ZZZ I was informed by maintenance control that the mdc (main fuel control) had been looked at and the problem was with the fmu (fuel metering unit). Maintenance control said that the fmu would be on the next flight arriving at XH30. At approximately XG00 I was informed that the aircraft with the part would be delayed until XK30. When the part arrived there was a copy of the amm (aircraft maintenance manual) fmu removal and install in the box. After installing the fmu; I called ZZZ1 hangar for information about the operations checks needed for replacement of the fmu. The hangar then faxed me a copy of the operations checks but no information about a rii (required inspection item). After completing the operations and leak checks; I signed off the engine squawk in the maintenance log in accordance with the amm. After arriving in ZZZ1 the next day I was informed that replacement of the fmu was a rii function. I did not realize that and had no way of checking while in ZZZ. I was not informed at the time by maintenance control or the hangar. A company inspector had discovered the error after the aircraft had flown its routes. He had the fmu reinstalled and inspected in accordance with the rii inspection.

Title: A CRJ700 HAD AN ENG FUEL METERING UNIT REPLACED PER THE MAINT MANUAL AND OPERATIONAL CHKS ALL OK. FAILED TO HAVE FAA REQUIRED INSPECTION.
Narrative: AT APPROX XA30 ON SEP/SAT/06; I WAS ASKED TO GET ON A FLT TO ZZZ TO INVESTIGATE AN INFLT ENG SHUTDOWN OF AN AIRLINE'S ACFT. UPON ARRIVING AT ZZZ I WAS INFORMED BY MAINT CTL THAT THE MDC (MAIN FUEL CTL) HAD BEEN LOOKED AT AND THE PROB WAS WITH THE FMU (FUEL METERING UNIT). MAINT CTL SAID THAT THE FMU WOULD BE ON THE NEXT FLT ARRIVING AT XH30. AT APPROX XG00 I WAS INFORMED THAT THE ACFT WITH THE PART WOULD BE DELAYED UNTIL XK30. WHEN THE PART ARRIVED THERE WAS A COPY OF THE AMM (ACFT MAINT MANUAL) FMU REMOVAL AND INSTALL IN THE BOX. AFTER INSTALLING THE FMU; I CALLED ZZZ1 HANGAR FOR INFO ABOUT THE OPS CHKS NEEDED FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE FMU. THE HANGAR THEN FAXED ME A COPY OF THE OPS CHKS BUT NO INFO ABOUT A RII (REQUIRED INSPECTION ITEM). AFTER COMPLETING THE OPS AND LEAK CHKS; I SIGNED OFF THE ENG SQUAWK IN THE MAINT LOG IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE AMM. AFTER ARRIVING IN ZZZ1 THE NEXT DAY I WAS INFORMED THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE FMU WAS A RII FUNCTION. I DID NOT REALIZE THAT AND HAD NO WAY OF CHKING WHILE IN ZZZ. I WAS NOT INFORMED AT THE TIME BY MAINT CTL OR THE HANGAR. A COMPANY INSPECTOR HAD DISCOVERED THE ERROR AFTER THE ACFT HAD FLOWN ITS ROUTES. HE HAD THE FMU REINSTALLED AND INSPECTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE RII INSPECTION.
