Narrative:
While climbing out of jfk with clearance to 11000 ft; switched frequencys; checked in; controller cleared us direct rbv and climb to 13000 ft; first officer repeated clearance. At about 12400 ft; saw traffic at 1 O'clock position; crossing our flight path; TCAS showed it level 13000 ft at about 6 mi; leveled at about 12600 ft and got a traffic alert from TCAS. I asked first officer to check with ATC about traffic when ATC said 'air carrier Y expedite climb through 14000' followed shortly by 'air carrier X descend immediately to 12000.' I started descent; first officer repeated clearance; and reported traffic in sight. I was in descent when we got a descend RA. We leveled at 12000 ft; cleared the traffic by 1000 ft vertical separation; and continued our flight.

Title: EMB140 PLT OBSERVES TFC ON TCAS AND CEASES CLB JUST AS TCAS RA SOUNDS FOR DSCNT AND ATC ISSUES DSCNT CLRNC. RESULTING SEPARATION IS 1000 FT VERT.
Narrative: WHILE CLBING OUT OF JFK WITH CLRNC TO 11000 FT; SWITCHED FREQS; CHKED IN; CTLR CLRED US DIRECT RBV AND CLB TO 13000 FT; FO REPEATED CLRNC. AT ABOUT 12400 FT; SAW TFC AT 1 O'CLOCK POS; XING OUR FLT PATH; TCAS SHOWED IT LEVEL 13000 FT AT ABOUT 6 MI; LEVELED AT ABOUT 12600 FT AND GOT A TFC ALERT FROM TCAS. I ASKED FO TO CHK WITH ATC ABOUT TFC WHEN ATC SAID 'ACR Y EXPEDITE CLB THROUGH 14000' FOLLOWED SHORTLY BY 'ACR X DSND IMMEDIATELY TO 12000.' I STARTED DSCNT; FO REPEATED CLRNC; AND RPTED TFC IN SIGHT. I WAS IN DSCNT WHEN WE GOT A DSND RA. WE LEVELED AT 12000 FT; CLRED THE TFC BY 1000 FT VERT SEPARATION; AND CONTINUED OUR FLT.
