Narrative:
During a 4 day trip; I repeatedly observed that runway 31L at taxiway Z in jfk has no yellow hold short lines painted. The intersection does have wig-wag and yellow 'clamshell' lights; but in lieu of the hold short line; there are two red boxes about 4x6 painted on the taxiway; one on each side of the centerline. The release showed no NOTAMS for this configuration.
