Narrative:
On walkaround I noticed 2 fasteners missing on belly of plane near beacon. Notified captain who called maintenance. About 10 mins prior to push he called maintenance again to query status and was told they had no parts for that and to just let ZZZ1 know. Release checked good -- no changes. Flew to ZZZ2 and let operations know. Captain followed up with phone call to maintenance controller; who apparently wasn't happy and thought ZZZ maintenance (and pilot team) should've done more. Captain relayed that maintenance controller said in the future don't take a verbal ok from local maintenance. Lessons learned: just put everything in ACARS and let them sort it out. Also; don't assume something is minor/cosmetic and a simple fix.
