Narrative:
While towing an ATR out of the hangar with the help of the lead technician following all safety and manuals procedures; the company provided towbar came off from the nose landing gear attachment and the aircraft rolled back by itself. Noting the situation I applied the emergency brakes and the aircraft stopped without any incident or accident. Cause: the probable cause; could be the spring that holds the 2 forks in place is fatigue and didn't hold the 2 forks locked with the nose gear attachment. Follow emergency procedures; the aircraft emergency brakes were applied and the aircraft stopped. It would be smart to verify that the towbars provided by the company are the correct ones as per ATR; and provide a routine check and lubrication on so critical equipment. Verify if this type of equipment is inspected periodically for serviceability by other than the mechanics.
