Narrative:
Overshot altitude by 200 to 300 ft; then returned to published altitude. Caused by high vertical speed when autoplt engaged; and not quickly decreasing the rate with control knob. In the process; disabled altitude capture function. It is a normal procedure to engage the autoplt then decrease rate of climb. The situation was exasperated by a very light aircraft and low altitude level off (1500 ft).
