Narrative:

On arrival at cockpit performed normal preflight duties; which included starting the APU. This aircraft had a deferred APU; however; the deferral was not present in the paperwork in flight operations. The deferral sticker was present adjacent to the APU switch; but was quite difficult to discern if standing while activating the switch; even though one has a clear view of the switch. After running the APU for 1 minute; the right pack was turned on; and shortly afterward some smoke was introduced into the cabin. We turned off the right pack; and the APU and had the crew get off the aircraft. Operations was called; and they contacted maintenance. Fire department eventually showed up and inspected the aircraft. Maintenance ran both engines and both packs; and it was determined that all smoke was evacuated; and no further maintenance was required; and ready for release. Normal taxi and takeoff; with only a small residual smell in the cockpit; and on climb out I called the flight attendants who reported some odor coming through the air-conditioning; and small amount of smoke. Performed all appropriate checklists. Noted that there was never any concentration of smoke. After following checklists; no improvement in smoke or odor; and returned to airport.
