Narrative:
Departed cvg airport for ZZZ on bluegrass 7 over iiu. Flight plan route was iiu direct mystic (mys) direct pocket city (pxv). After iiu ZID asked our routing and I replied above route. Upon further examination of the pre-departure clearance; the 'cleared' routing showed iiu direct pxv. I believe that we looked at the 'filed flight plan' route; which was directly below the 'cleared' route on the pre departure clearance when loading the FMS. The close proximity of these 2 rtes; and their similarity must have caused the confusion. I would recommend only putting the 'cleared' route on the pre departure clearance to avoid future mistakes. For my part I will exercise better diligence in my checking of all pre departure clearance routings and clrncs. Supplemental information from acn 721885: I was unaware that we had been given an additional clearance and followed the pre departure clearance issued clearance I received before taxi out. We did have a slight change from our flight planned route; eliminating J112 and sending us direct from point to point; but that was corrected in the FMS route before takeoff. I was made aware of this report several hours after the flight by the chief pilot's office. ATC did not notify us of a course deviation in-flight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B737-800 DEPARTING CVG APPARENTLY MISREAD A PDC MESSAGE AND FLEW A FILED FLT PLAN RTE INSTEAD OF THE PDC MODIFIED RTE.
Narrative: DEPARTED CVG ARPT FOR ZZZ ON BLUEGRASS 7 OVER IIU. FLT PLAN RTE WAS IIU DIRECT MYSTIC (MYS) DIRECT POCKET CITY (PXV). AFTER IIU ZID ASKED OUR ROUTING AND I REPLIED ABOVE RTE. UPON FURTHER EXAM OF THE PRE-DEP CLRNC; THE 'CLRED' ROUTING SHOWED IIU DIRECT PXV. I BELIEVE THAT WE LOOKED AT THE 'FILED FLT PLAN' RTE; WHICH WAS DIRECTLY BELOW THE 'CLRED' RTE ON THE PDC WHEN LOADING THE FMS. THE CLOSE PROX OF THESE 2 RTES; AND THEIR SIMILARITY MUST HAVE CAUSED THE CONFUSION. I WOULD RECOMMEND ONLY PUTTING THE 'CLRED' RTE ON THE PDC TO AVOID FUTURE MISTAKES. FOR MY PART I WILL EXERCISE BETTER DILIGENCE IN MY CHKING OF ALL PDC ROUTINGS AND CLRNCS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 721885: I WAS UNAWARE THAT WE HAD BEEN GIVEN AN ADDITIONAL CLRNC AND FOLLOWED THE PDC ISSUED CLRNC I RECEIVED BEFORE TAXI OUT. WE DID HAVE A SLIGHT CHANGE FROM OUR FLT PLANNED RTE; ELIMINATING J112 AND SENDING US DIRECT FROM POINT TO POINT; BUT THAT WAS CORRECTED IN THE FMS RTE BEFORE TKOF. I WAS MADE AWARE OF THIS RPT SEVERAL HRS AFTER THE FLT BY THE CHIEF PLT'S OFFICE. ATC DID NOT NOTIFY US OF A COURSE DEV INFLT.
