Narrative:
We taxied out with MEL flight spoilers. Prior to takeoff we had an amber 'spoiler' EICAS message. I contacted company maintenance through dispatch; both of whom assured me that this was acceptable and should be disregarded; due to the maintenance action that had been taken with MEL. We completed the flight without incident. Upon further investigation we discovered that the spoiler light should not have been illuminated.
