Narrative:
At FL280; ATC asked us to climb to 290 for traffic. We accepted this clearance believing (in error) that the rvsm limit was FL290. ATC later asked us to take FL280 or FL300 for traffic once again. We stated unable due to rvsm limitations. ATC then asked why we were filed /J and assigned us FL280. Upon review; we realized that the limit as stated in the manual is FL290 and above; not above FL290. ATC noted that no safety issues were a result of this oversight. Sent note to dispatch to refile us with the appropriate identifier (/east) and suggested they file all future flights with this restriction the same.supplemental information from reporter 727686: received ACARS message from flight noting that the flight should have been filed with ATC /east instead of what it was filed /J since the aircraft had the placard skin damage rvsm restriction.
