Narrative:
We knew it was going to be a bad day when the pastry stand was closed. Early am departure. Ground operations and takeoff were uneventful. Passing 14000 ft; we heard a loud kaboom followed by vibration. The captain was flying the aircraft and felt a loss of power from the #2 engine. The engine instruments initially indicated rotation; egt remained approximately 600; oil quantity appeared about 80%. There was no engine response with throttle movement. As we pulled out the checklists; oil quantity decreased to 6%. The captain called for the engine fire/severe damage checklist. The first officer ran the qrc while the captain declared an emergency and made a 180 degree turn back towards ZZZZ. Flight attendants were notified for a cabin advisory and told them we would be on the ground in 10 mins. The captain called operations and had them notify dispatch of our situation. The approach descent checklist was completed. The captain performed an uneventful single engine approach to landing. After landing; oil quantity was 0% and the mechanics noted metal 'bb's' in the tailpipe of the #2 engine.

Title: B737 CREW PASSING 14000 FEET ON CLIMB OUT; HEARS LOUD 'KABOOM' WITH POWER LOSS AND VIBRATION.
Narrative: WE KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BE A BAD DAY WHEN THE PASTRY STAND WAS CLOSED. EARLY AM DEP. GND OPS AND TKOF WERE UNEVENTFUL. PASSING 14000 FT; WE HEARD A LOUD KABOOM FOLLOWED BY VIBRATION. THE CAPT WAS FLYING THE ACFT AND FELT A LOSS OF PWR FROM THE #2 ENG. THE ENG INSTS INITIALLY INDICATED ROTATION; EGT REMAINED APPROX 600; OIL QUANTITY APPEARED ABOUT 80%. THERE WAS NO ENG RESPONSE WITH THROTTLE MOVEMENT. AS WE PULLED OUT THE CHKLISTS; OIL QUANTITY DECREASED TO 6%. THE CAPT CALLED FOR THE ENG FIRE/SEVERE DAMAGE CHKLIST. THE FO RAN THE QRC WHILE THE CAPT DECLARED AN EMER AND MADE A 180 DEG TURN BACK TOWARDS ZZZZ. FLT ATTENDANTS WERE NOTIFIED FOR A CABIN ADVISORY AND TOLD THEM WE WOULD BE ON THE GND IN 10 MINS. THE CAPT CALLED OPS AND HAD THEM NOTIFY DISPATCH OF OUR SITUATION. THE APCH DSCNT CHKLIST WAS COMPLETED. THE CAPT PERFORMED AN UNEVENTFUL SINGLE ENG APCH TO LNDG. AFTER LNDG; OIL QUANTITY WAS 0% AND THE MECHS NOTED METAL 'BB'S' IN THE TAILPIPE OF THE #2 ENG.
