Narrative:

I was an international relief officer on an MD11. I did the preflight walkaround and noticed no aircraft problems. The flight proceeded without incident to ZZZZ1. On arrival; the crew was notified that the mechanic in ZZZZ idented a #3 engine cracked engine pylon fairing before we left ZZZZ. The crew was not informed of this crack. Company maintenance was informed. The problem is that the aircraft had a known open maintenance item; but no effort was made to inform the captain. There was no logbook entry. Maintenance control should have stopped the flight.
