Narrative:
Flight was to regain currency in aircraft after winter break. Crew consisted of private pilot and cfii. After some local maneuvering; returned to pwk for 3 takeoffs and lndgs. Prior to 2ND takeoff from runway 34; pwk tower instructed us to make left closed traffic to runway 34. We entered the downwind at about 1000 ft AGL/1600 ft MSL. Immediately upon receiving the advisory that we are #2 to follow a cessna from the tower; we made visual contact with that cessna about 200-300 ft ahead of us at our 2 O'clock position and our altitude. They were on about a 090 degree heading and on a collision course with us. Took evasive action turning 30 degrees right and descending 50-100 ft. This is a reminder that even while in contact with ATC in class D airspace; ATC is only responsible for sequencing; not separation; so pilots need to maintain a high degree of vigilance. Given that pwk tower does have radar available to them (I believe); we would have appreciated the local controller pointing out that collision hazard to us.

Title: PA28 PILOT REPORTS NMAC WITH CESSNA IN PWK TRAFFIC PATTERN.
Narrative: FLT WAS TO REGAIN CURRENCY IN ACFT AFTER WINTER BREAK. CREW CONSISTED OF PVT PLT AND CFII. AFTER SOME LCL MANEUVERING; RETURNED TO PWK FOR 3 TKOFS AND LNDGS. PRIOR TO 2ND TKOF FROM RWY 34; PWK TWR INSTRUCTED US TO MAKE L CLOSED TFC TO RWY 34. WE ENTERED THE DOWNWIND AT ABOUT 1000 FT AGL/1600 FT MSL. IMMEDIATELY UPON RECEIVING THE ADVISORY THAT WE ARE #2 TO FOLLOW A CESSNA FROM THE TWR; WE MADE VISUAL CONTACT WITH THAT CESSNA ABOUT 200-300 FT AHEAD OF US AT OUR 2 O'CLOCK POS AND OUR ALT. THEY WERE ON ABOUT A 090 DEG HDG AND ON A COLLISION COURSE WITH US. TOOK EVASIVE ACTION TURNING 30 DEGS R AND DSNDING 50-100 FT. THIS IS A REMINDER THAT EVEN WHILE IN CONTACT WITH ATC IN CLASS D AIRSPACE; ATC IS ONLY RESPONSIBLE FOR SEQUENCING; NOT SEPARATION; SO PLTS NEED TO MAINTAIN A HIGH DEGREE OF VIGILANCE. GIVEN THAT PWK TWR DOES HAVE RADAR AVAILABLE TO THEM (I BELIEVE); WE WOULD HAVE APPRECIATED THE LCL CTLR POINTING OUT THAT COLLISION HAZARD TO US.
