Narrative:
On arrival at ZZZ; we were marshalled in to the gate. As we approached the jetway on our left; the marshaller kept motioning us forward. Eventually; it got to the point where I; as the captain; couldn't see the jetway unless I looked way behind where it normally should be. It appeared to me as if we were going to hit the jetway with our left engine. I stopped the aircraft; even though the marshaller still wanted us to move forward. I looked at where the jetway was parked and it was over 20 ft from the red safety square that it is supposed to be parked in. I shut down the aircraft and when I could get off the aircraft; went down and looked to make sure no contact was made and then talked to operations about the situation. Operations replied that they are not used to having 800's in ZZZ; and that the airport had painted the parking spot in a much different location than where the other aircraft stop. The agents obviously are in a habit of not repositioning the jetway to the safety spot after the aircraft departs the gate. They need to be counseled that the safety square is there for a reason; and that they were lucky no damage was done this time -- they might not be so lucky next time! The gate agents need to repos the jetway after each departure -- as I think they are required! The marshallers need to be aware of the fact that the aircraft is moving into close proximity of the jetway and stop the aircraft until it is moved! Accident potential due improper marshalling.

Title: B737-800 IS MARSHALLED INTO PARKING WITHOUT THE JET WAY BEING PROPERLY POSITIONED. THE MARSHALLER DOES NOT SEE THE PROBLEM; BUT THE CAPTAIN DOES AND STOPS THE ACFT IN TIME.
