Narrative:
Departed ZZZ with the APU placarded inoperative. After takeoff and climbing through 10000 ft; the left generator drive light came on steady along with the associated EICAS message. Leveled at 13000 ft in IMC; declared an emergency; and returned to ZZZ. Completed appropriate checklists and landed overweight at 220000 pounds at ZZZ. Landing was smooth.
