Narrative:
We were cleared after departure the 'breezy point climb.' we departed runway 31L. We started our turn towards cri VOR at approximately 600 ft MSL. As we approached cri VOR; the autoplt was selected 'on.' when we were directly overhead cri VOR; 'navigation' was selected for course guidance. The aircraft began to turn southwest; but stopped; the cri 223 degree radial was not intercepted. In approximately 30 seconds we noticed this error and started to turn further to the south to manually intercept the 223 degree radial. At that time; departure control noticed and gave us an immediate turn to heading 180 degrees to intercept 223 degree radial. Seconds later; we were established on course. We were told to call nyc departure control. I did this and spoke with mr X. I accepted full responsibility of the event. Mr X understood and advised us to be more vigilant.
