Narrative:
While climbing to our assigned altitude of 7000 ft on the kennedy 1 departure; canarsie climb out of jfk runway 31L; we took the wrong heading off of cri rather than the 176 degree radial and as we questioned ATC they gave us a vector to turn left to 090 degrees. Then they gave us a heading of 050 degrees and as we climbed we went through 7000 ft and had an overspd at the same time. The climb was stopped at 7500 ft and we returned to 7000 ft and the correct speed. ATC told us of the mistake on the departure but did not mention the speed of altitude deviation. The departure deviation was in part due to the confusion with the clearance and departure and then the speed and altitude was due in part to an updraft as we leveled off.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: EMB145 CREW FAILS TO TURN TO 176 RADIAL CROSSING CRI ON KENNEDY 1 DEPARTURE THEN FAILS TO LEVEL AT ASSIGNED ALTITUDE AND OVERSPEEDS THE ACFT.
Narrative: WHILE CLBING TO OUR ASSIGNED ALT OF 7000 FT ON THE KENNEDY 1 DEP; CANARSIE CLB OUT OF JFK RWY 31L; WE TOOK THE WRONG HDG OFF OF CRI RATHER THAN THE 176 DEG RADIAL AND AS WE QUESTIONED ATC THEY GAVE US A VECTOR TO TURN L TO 090 DEGS. THEN THEY GAVE US A HDG OF 050 DEGS AND AS WE CLBED WE WENT THROUGH 7000 FT AND HAD AN OVERSPD AT THE SAME TIME. THE CLB WAS STOPPED AT 7500 FT AND WE RETURNED TO 7000 FT AND THE CORRECT SPD. ATC TOLD US OF THE MISTAKE ON THE DEP BUT DID NOT MENTION THE SPD OF ALTDEV. THE DEP DEV WAS IN PART DUE TO THE CONFUSION WITH THE CLRNC AND DEP AND THEN THE SPD AND ALT WAS DUE IN PART TO AN UPDRAFT AS WE LEVELED OFF.
