Narrative:
I was the first officer on flight from kahului; maui; to ZZZ on apr/mon/07. Preflight and departure were normal. In addition we were being line checked by an FAA inspector. Approximately 200 NM west of fix engine on the echo track we were alerted via EICAS that the left aft fuel pump low pressure condition existed. The captain and I complied with the appropriate checklist and notified both maintenance and dispatch of the situation. The captain received all pertinent information and made the decision to return to hnl. Both maintenance and dispatch agreed with the captain that that would be the most prudent decision. The captain also briefed the FAA inspector and the inspector also agreed with the captain's decision. We did not declare an emergency; but did tell ATC that we needed to return to hnl. We received a clearance to return to hnl and landed in hnl uneventfully. We entered the appropriate write-up in the aircraft logbook. We then were assigned to fly from hnl to ZZZ to complete our duty period. We raised the question of crew legality and were told that we were legal to fly by the crew desk and duty manager. Far 121.471 section G stated and also the FAA inspector agreed that it was legal. We did ask if there were another crew to fly; they said we were legal (crew desk) and that it was our assignment. We agreed to fly and all parties including the FAA inspector agreed we were legal to fly. We flew to ZZZ; landed uneventfully.
