Narrative:
Aircraft X arrived ZZZ flight abc gate xx with log entry X 'spoiler EICAS message illuminated in-flight (cruise) on upper display as well as overhead repeat write-up.' T/south problem and #2L spoiler modification faulted positive control area. In error; deactivated wrong spoiler pair (2 and 11) when spoilers 5 and 8 were the correct pair. Supplemental information from acn 738477: the wrong spoiler pair was locked out with respect to the module fault. The confusion was attributed to the module number in relation to the spoiler number. The problem was found after returning to the line room and doublechking the maintenance manual; which was on site at aircraft. In the future; doublechking should be done before maintenance is performed!
