Narrative:

Potential failure of the main battery charger. Shortly after entering ny oceanic airspace a main battery charger status message appeared on EICAS. The QRH was consulted; it directed 'crew awareness.' I notified the controling dispatcher by ACARS; who initiated an HF phone patch with maintenance control as we were rapidly departing VHF ACARS coverage. Maintenance control requested a return to phl; as the aircraft could not be repaired at the destination ZZZZ and would be unable to be dispatched further. We initiated the turnback and performed an overweight landing. Phl maintenance performed an overweight landing inspection; an ETOPS check; and replaced the main battery; the main battery charger and relay. We departed for ZZZZ 1 hour and 30 mins after arrival.
