Narrative:
We departed runway 01 at teb after briefing the teb 5 departure; including altitudes. Upon making the initial turn to heading 040; I discovered that the first officer had set 1500 ft in the altitude alerter. This altitude is for beginning the turn toward pnj NDB; not for leveling off. I noticed the error and turned the altitude alerter to 3000 ft instead of 2000 ft for the initial leveloff. I called for the first officer to confirm that altitude but was already level at 3000 ft before he was able to confirm the SID altitude again. I am very familiar with the teb 5 departure and have flown it for years but had a momentary lapse when I noticed the incorrectly set alerter after takeoff. There were no traffic conflicts/TCAS-indicated traffic in the area. By the time we contacted ATC; we were approaching the pnj NDB where a climb would be made to 3000 ft on the SID. We were queried by ny departure about our altitude but immediately cleared to yet a higher altitude.

Title: GLF4 EXPERIENCES ALT DEV ON TEB DEP FROM RWY 01 AT TEB.
Narrative: WE DEPARTED RWY 01 AT TEB AFTER BRIEFING THE TEB 5 DEP; INCLUDING ALTS. UPON MAKING THE INITIAL TURN TO HDG 040; I DISCOVERED THAT THE FO HAD SET 1500 FT IN THE ALT ALERTER. THIS ALT IS FOR BEGINNING THE TURN TOWARD PNJ NDB; NOT FOR LEVELING OFF. I NOTICED THE ERROR AND TURNED THE ALT ALERTER TO 3000 FT INSTEAD OF 2000 FT FOR THE INITIAL LEVELOFF. I CALLED FOR THE FO TO CONFIRM THAT ALT BUT WAS ALREADY LEVEL AT 3000 FT BEFORE HE WAS ABLE TO CONFIRM THE SID ALT AGAIN. I AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE TEB 5 DEP AND HAVE FLOWN IT FOR YEARS BUT HAD A MOMENTARY LAPSE WHEN I NOTICED THE INCORRECTLY SET ALERTER AFTER TKOF. THERE WERE NO TFC CONFLICTS/TCAS-INDICATED TFC IN THE AREA. BY THE TIME WE CONTACTED ATC; WE WERE APCHING THE PNJ NDB WHERE A CLB WOULD BE MADE TO 3000 FT ON THE SID. WE WERE QUERIED BY NY DEP ABOUT OUR ALT BUT IMMEDIATELY CLRED TO YET A HIGHER ALT.
