Narrative:
ATIS information identified runway 6R for departures ground instructed us to taxi to runway 6C and to obtain new ATIS information which was then current. Crew had briefed taxi to runway 6R prior to pushback; but given short taxi and need to finish checklist and start second engine; we did not have time to brief taxi to runway 6C. Hold short area for runway 6C is very confusing as there are two hold short lines within 25 feet that face opposite directions. The first line is for runway 6C; but is not well painted. The second is for runway 6R and had fresh coat of paint. The captain appeared to be taxiing too fast to stop at the first line and was unable to stop safely at the proper line once he realized its location. I recommend a large; lighted sign be placed that clearly designates the first hold short line as that for runway 6C. Opposite direction hold short lines in such short proximity are not common in my experience.

Title: MD88 FO BELIEVES HOLD SHORT LINES FOR RWYS 6C AND 6R AT CLE NEED BETTER IDENTIFIER SIGNS DUE TO CLOSE PROXIMITY.
Narrative: ATIS INFO IDENTIFIED RWY 6R FOR DEPARTURES GND INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI TO RWY 6C AND TO OBTAIN NEW ATIS INFO WHICH WAS THEN CURRENT. CREW HAD BRIEFED TAXI TO RWY 6R PRIOR TO PUSHBACK; BUT GIVEN SHORT TAXI AND NEED TO FINISH CHKLIST AND START SECOND ENGINE; WE DID NOT HAVE TIME TO BRIEF TAXI TO RWY 6C. HOLD SHORT AREA FOR RWY 6C IS VERY CONFUSING AS THERE ARE TWO HOLD SHORT LINES WITHIN 25 FEET THAT FACE OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS. THE FIRST LINE IS FOR RWY 6C; BUT IS NOT WELL PAINTED. THE SECOND IS FOR RWY 6R AND HAD FRESH COAT OF PAINT. THE CAPT APPEARED TO BE TAXIING TOO FAST TO STOP AT THE FIRST LINE AND WAS UNABLE TO STOP SAFELY AT THE PROPER LINE ONCE HE REALIZED ITS LOCATION. I RECOMMEND A LARGE; LIGHTED SIGN BE PLACED THAT CLEARLY DESIGNATES THE FIRST HOLD SHORT LINE AS THAT FOR RWY 6C. OPPOSITE DIRECTION HOLD SHORT LINES IN SUCH SHORT PROXIMITY ARE NOT COMMON IN MY EXPERIENCE.
