Narrative:
At the beginning of our descent into ZZZ; shortly after the engines had reduced power; the left engine rolled back completely and shut itself down. We notified center; declared an emergency; and performed the engine fail checklist. Since we were near ZZZ at the time we chose that as our diversion airport. We attempted one restart per the checklist and the engine remained unresponsive. Remaining checklists were performed and an uneventful landing was made at ZZZ in clear and calm WX. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: maintenance discovered that a variable stator actuator had failed and caused the engine to be shut down by the fadec to prevent compressor stalls.

Title: GV PILOT REPORTS ENGINE FAILURE AT FL400 AT BEGINNING OF DESCENT AND DIVERSION TO ARPT DIRECTLY BELOW AT TIME OF FAILURE
Narrative: AT THE BEGINNING OF OUR DSCNT INTO ZZZ; SHORTLY AFTER THE ENGS HAD REDUCED PWR; THE L ENG ROLLED BACK COMPLETELY AND SHUT ITSELF DOWN. WE NOTIFIED CTR; DECLARED AN EMER; AND PERFORMED THE ENG FAIL CHKLIST. SINCE WE WERE NEAR ZZZ AT THE TIME WE CHOSE THAT AS OUR DIVERSION ARPT. WE ATTEMPTED ONE RESTART PER THE CHKLIST AND THE ENG REMAINED UNRESPONSIVE. REMAINING CHKLISTS WERE PERFORMED AND AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG WAS MADE AT ZZZ IN CLR AND CALM WX. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: MAINTENANCE DISCOVERED THAT A VARIABLE STATOR ACTUATOR HAD FAILED AND CAUSED THE ENGINE TO BE SHUT DOWN BY THE FADEC TO PREVENT COMPRESSOR STALLS.
