Narrative:
Departed runway 18R at tampa. Departure turned us north to a heading of 350 degrees. About 5 mi later departure turns us to 010 degrees; and we had 3 buildups 5 mi ahead that we were not going to fly into. We asked departure for 10 degrees left and ATC replied 'unable.' we then asked for 30 degrees right; and ATC replied 'unable.' the first officer advised we had a buildup straight ahead. ATC advised; 'we have no WX' on our scope. I got on the radio and advised ATC that we were coming to a 035 degree heading. About 5-10 seconds later; an unidented voice came on the frequency admonishing another carrier with 'what? Do you think he is lying?' ATC stopped talking to us about 2-3 mins. After the 2-3 min lull; ATC asked us what our heading was; and we told him it was 035 degrees. Shortly thereafter; we changed frequency and made our way to our destination.
