Narrative:
Upon taxi in to the gate from taxiway rb the aircraft parked in lindy were parked sufficiently close to the taxiway. Taxiing on the painted line would possibly have caused a meeting on the starboard wing of our B757 and the cockpit of the jets parked in lindy. I realize the normal entry to the gate is taxiway rc; but the fact remains that the painted line and seemingly random placement of the aircraft in lindy could cause a problem. Were our eyes deceiving us; or is there sufficient room to taxi a B757 with or without winglets on the center line with aircraft parked in lindy? If there is sufficient room; what is the benchmark a pilot can use to ensure the parked aircraft are properly spotted in lindy; since there are no lines painted on lindy to ensure proper placement; as the MD80's and other aircraft were not equidistant from the centerline.

Title: CAPT OF B757-200 FEELS APPARENTLY RANDOM PARKING OF ACFT IN 'PARKING AREA LINDY' AT EWR FAILS TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE PASSAGE FOR LONG WINGED ACFT AT ROMEO BRAVO TXWY.
Narrative: UPON TAXI IN TO THE GATE FROM TXWY RB THE ACFT PARKED IN LINDY WERE PARKED SUFFICIENTLY CLOSE TO THE TXWY. TAXIING ON THE PAINTED LINE WOULD POSSIBLY HAVE CAUSED A MEETING ON THE STARBOARD WING OF OUR B757 AND THE COCKPIT OF THE JETS PARKED IN LINDY. I REALIZE THE NORMAL ENTRY TO THE GATE IS TXWY RC; BUT THE FACT REMAINS THAT THE PAINTED LINE AND SEEMINGLY RANDOM PLACEMENT OF THE ACFT IN LINDY COULD CAUSE A PROBLEM. WERE OUR EYES DECEIVING US; OR IS THERE SUFFICIENT ROOM TO TAXI A B757 WITH OR WITHOUT WINGLETS ON THE CENTER LINE WITH ACFT PARKED IN LINDY? IF THERE IS SUFFICIENT ROOM; WHAT IS THE BENCHMARK A PLT CAN USE TO ENSURE THE PARKED ACFT ARE PROPERLY SPOTTED IN LINDY; SINCE THERE ARE NO LINES PAINTED ON LINDY TO ENSURE PROPER PLACEMENT; AS THE MD80'S AND OTHER ACFT WERE NOT EQUIDISTANT FROM THE CTRLINE.
