Narrative:
I had a pilot discrepancy of ACARS inoperative. Using my troubleshooting skills I came to the conclusion that the communication management unit was bad. I removed the part (cmu) and brought it to the line stores room. I logged on to the inventory computer and entered the part number of the removed cmu. We did not have the part number (Y) in stock; however there was a stores comment that says 'this item can be used in place of part X on all B737 aircraft.' I checked the shelf and saw that we had part X. From reading the notes on part Y; I thought that they were interchangeable due to it coming up using the aircraft as previously mentioned. I verified the software and installed the cmu. I performed the operations check per the maintenance manual and it operated normal. My opinion is that either part X should have never showed up or the notes on part X should also appear when you enter part Y or even put that these 2 items are one way interchangeable on certain aircraft.
