Narrative:
Ground operations normal. After takeoff gear door EICAS message illuminated; checklist accomplished and decision made to continue. Climbing through approximately 20000 ft left hydraulic quantity EICAS message illuminated. Fluid level decreased to .48. Checklist was accomplished; emergency was declared and flight returned to ZZZ. Checklist for complete left hydraulic system failure was reviewed. Descent and rtb was uneventful. Hydraulic quantity slowly decreased to .35. Pumps were turned back on for configuring; approach and landing. Hydraulic quantity decreased to .2 when the gear was lowered and remained at .2 for the remainder of the flight. Landing was uneventful; stopped straight ahead; pinned gear and aircraft was towed back to the maintenance ramp. Post-flight inspection confirmed hydraulic leak.
