Narrative:
While taxiing for departure; flight attendant called to inform us that several passenger had informed her that smoke was coming from the pre-cooler exhaust on l-hand engine. I requested she take a look and call us back. She called back and said there was visible smoke. Shut down engine and returned to gate.

Title: A SAAB 340B RETURN TO THE GATE AFTER PRECOOLER SMOKE WAS OBSERVED DURING TAXIING FOR TKOF. THE ENG WAS SHUT DOWN DURING THE TAXI BACK.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING FOR DEP; FLT ATTENDANT CALLED TO INFORM US THAT SEVERAL PAX HAD INFORMED HER THAT SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE PRE-COOLER EXHAUST ON L-HAND ENG. I REQUESTED SHE TAKE A LOOK AND CALL US BACK. SHE CALLED BACK AND SAID THERE WAS VISIBLE SMOKE. SHUT DOWN ENG AND RETURNED TO GATE.
