Narrative:
Taxiing out from gateway I got confused on the unmarked and unlit txwys and missed a turn onto taxiway E1. By the time I realized I missed it I continued on the taxiway to intercept taxiway a and taxi to the runway. I briefed the taxi and knew where I wanted to go but made the mistake anyway. I need to take a real lesson learned and will not do this again. Some lights and markings of txwys in that area would help.callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that he was taxiing from the cargo area to depart on runway 22L. Instructions were to turn right on 'E1' then left on taxiway 'a' to runway 22L. Reporter states that there are no taxiway signs for 'E1' or taxiway 'a.' the absence of taxiway lights on 'E1' and taxiway 'a' between 'east' and 'D' make ground operations extremely difficult at mhr. Even though the flight crew briefed their departure route prior to taxi; they missed 'E1' and turned onto 'D1' which is weight restricted.

Title: FLT CREW MISSED TURN ONTO TXWY 'E1' AT MHR AND MISTAKENLY TURNED RIGHT ONTO TXWY 'D1' WHICH IS WEIGHT RESTRICTED. RPTR CLAIMS THAT TXWY SIGNS AND LIGHTS ARE NONEXISTENT IN THIS AREA.

BY THE TIME I REALIZED I MISSED IT I CONTINUED ON THE TXWY TO INTERCEPT TXWY A AND TAXI TO THE RUNWAY. I BRIEFED THE TAXI AND KNEW WHERE I WANTED TO GO BUT MADE THE MISTAKE ANYWAY. SOME LIGHTS AND MARKINGS OF TXWYS IN THAT AREA WOULD HELP.CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED THAT HE WAS TAXIING FROM THE CARGO AREA TO DEPART ON RWY 22L. INSTRUCTIONS WERE TO TURN RIGHT ON 'E1' THEN LEFT ON TXWY 'A' TO RWY 22L. REPORTER STATES THAT THERE ARE NO TXWY SIGNS FOR 'E1' OR TXWY 'A.' THE ABSENCE OF TXWY LIGHTS ON 'E1' AND TXWY 'A' BETWEEN 'E' AND 'D' MAKE GND OPERATIONS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AT MHR. EVEN THOUGH THE FLT CREW BRIEFED THEIR DEPARTURE ROUTE PRIOR TO TAXI; THEY MISSED 'E1' AND TURNED ONTO 'D1' WHICH IS WEIGHT RESTRICTED.
