Narrative:
After landing we were told of an outbound delay for maintenance. The maintenance was to install an APU part that was omitted when the APU was installed. We had flown in an apparently unairworthy condition. We had no knowledge of the missing component and successfully utilized the APU for departure and arrival. Perhaps our maintenance procedures need to be reviewed. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated he understood the missing part was an APU fluid drain line. The maintenance time needed for installing the missing part was very short.
