Narrative:

Established at cruise altitude of FL330 approximately abeam ZZZ on an overwater segment; the lead flight attendant reported an acrid burning odor in the forward galley. I then had the odor confirmed by another flight attendant and the first officer. We ran the QRH for smoke or fumes. Determined ZZZ was the nearest suitable airport for diversion and diverted direct to ZZZ. Declared emergency en route to ZZZ. Maintained 250+ KTS until 15 NM from airfield. After clearing the runway in ZZZ; the aircraft was inspected by the crash crew. Crash cleared the aircraft; so we proceeded to the gate and offloaded passenger. I then turned the aircraft over to maintenance and crash crew.
