Narrative:

We were told by ramp control to taxi to spot 1. My first officer said that he knew where spot 1 was and indicated a point on the airport diagram near our assigned takeoff runway. We started toward the spot that he indicated and switched to the correct ground frequency. Houston ground told us to stop at our present position. Houston ground told us that spot 1 was just behind us. There was no traffic conflict and houston ground then cleared us to the active runway. We noticed that the spot 1 point was not on our airport diagram chart; but later determined that the spot 1 point is depicted on a ramp chart. We also noticed that other airports show these spots on both charts; but most importantly they show the spots on the airport diagram. A '1' was indicated on the iah airport diagram near our departure runway; but it was there to illustrate a footnote. This '1' was in a circle that looked like the way a hold spot is commonly painted on the taxiway to indicate a hold spot. We recommend that these hold spots be added to the airport diagram.

Narrative: WE WERE TOLD BY RAMP CTL TO TAXI TO SPOT 1. MY FO SAID THAT HE KNEW WHERE SPOT 1 WAS AND INDICATED A POINT ON THE AIRPORT DIAGRAM NEAR OUR ASSIGNED TAKEOFF RWY. WE STARTED TOWARD THE SPOT THAT HE INDICATED AND SWITCHED TO THE CORRECT GND FREQUENCY. HOUSTON GND TOLD US TO STOP AT OUR PRESENT POSITION. HOUSTON GND TOLD US THAT SPOT 1 WAS JUST BEHIND US. THERE WAS NO TFC CONFLICT AND HOUSTON GND THEN CLRED US TO THE ACTIVE RWY. WE NOTICED THAT THE SPOT 1 POINT WAS NOT ON OUR ARPT DIAGRAM CHART; BUT LATER DETERMINED THAT THE SPOT 1 POINT IS DEPICTED ON A RAMP CHART. WE ALSO NOTICED THAT OTHER ARPTS SHOW THESE SPOTS ON BOTH CHARTS; BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY THEY SHOW THE SPOTS ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM. A '1' WAS INDICATED ON THE IAH ARPT DIAGRAM NEAR OUR DEP RWY; BUT IT WAS THERE TO ILLUSTRATE A FOOTNOTE. THIS '1' WAS IN A CIRCLE THAT LOOKED LIKE THE WAY A HOLD SPOT IS COMMONLY PAINTED ON THE TXWY TO INDICATE A HOLD SPOT. WE RECOMMEND THAT THESE HOLD SPOTS BE ADDED TO THE AIRPORT DIAGRAM.
