Narrative:
Needed to start engine at gate. Told guide man we would start engine #2 first as per procedure. He wanted us to start #1. He was insistent we start #1; said men were behind #2. I told him it is procedure to start #2. He finally agreed and called the area clear. After starting #2 another man came on the headset and asked if we could start #1 and shut down #2. He said there were men in the way. I immediately shut down #2 and told him that we will not start any engine till I speak to the supervisor. He was the supervisor. Bottom line is the ground folks had the start equipment next to #2 engine and were too lazy to move it. Even the supervisor wanted us to start #1 engine first. The 2 men constantly pressured me to start #1 engine. I had no problem informing them who was the captain and how this operation was going to run. A newer captain might not be so forceful. With overzealous ground persons pushing wrong procedures someone is going to get hurt or an engine damaged.
