Narrative:
PA28R-201 on a training mission (1 instructor and 1 student on board) was taking off from runway xx at XA15 (AWOS reported calm wind); after making appropriate CTAF calls while taxiing; holding short; and lining up for takeoff on runway xx. After rotation and takeoff; but with the landing gear still extended; my student and I simultaneously saw a blackhawk helicopter at our altitude (less than 50 ft AGL); about to cross our flight path (about 500 ft ahead); crossing the runway from right to left (ie; south to north). I took the controls; reduced throttles to idle; pitched down to pass beneath the helicopter and landed the airplane on the remaining runway. The helicopter apologized on the CTAF. Neither my student nor I had heard any radio calls of his intention to take off. The blackhawk helicopter had arrived just a few mins earlier and had reported on the CTAF that he would be dropping off a passenger. On arrival he had made calls on the CTAF on extended base; base; and short final to the helicopter pad. No calls were made on the CTAF for his departure. Clearly; he had not been listening to our calls either.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A PA28 INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT ON TKOF HAD A NEAR MISS WITH A BLACKHAWK HELI.
Narrative: PA28R-201 ON A TRAINING MISSION (1 INSTRUCTOR AND 1 STUDENT ON BOARD) WAS TAKING OFF FROM RWY XX AT XA15 (AWOS RPTED CALM WIND); AFTER MAKING APPROPRIATE CTAF CALLS WHILE TAXIING; HOLDING SHORT; AND LINING UP FOR TKOF ON RWY XX. AFTER ROTATION AND TKOF; BUT WITH THE LNDG GEAR STILL EXTENDED; MY STUDENT AND I SIMULTANEOUSLY SAW A BLACKHAWK HELI AT OUR ALT (LESS THAN 50 FT AGL); ABOUT TO CROSS OUR FLT PATH (ABOUT 500 FT AHEAD); XING THE RWY FROM R TO L (IE; S TO N). I TOOK THE CTLS; REDUCED THROTTLES TO IDLE; PITCHED DOWN TO PASS BENEATH THE HELI AND LANDED THE AIRPLANE ON THE REMAINING RWY. THE HELI APOLOGIZED ON THE CTAF. NEITHER MY STUDENT NOR I HAD HEARD ANY RADIO CALLS OF HIS INTENTION TO TAKE OFF. THE BLACKHAWK HELI HAD ARRIVED JUST A FEW MINS EARLIER AND HAD RPTED ON THE CTAF THAT HE WOULD BE DROPPING OFF A PAX. ON ARR HE HAD MADE CALLS ON THE CTAF ON EXTENDED BASE; BASE; AND SHORT FINAL TO THE HELI PAD. NO CALLS WERE MADE ON THE CTAF FOR HIS DEP. CLEARLY; HE HAD NOT BEEN LISTENING TO OUR CALLS EITHER.
