Narrative:

Upon returning from a cross country training flight; I completely lost power at about 2600 ft MSL when I was cleared for the visual approach to runway xxl at ZZZ (I was on the downwind leg for this runway at the time). I immediately initiated the restart procedure and when I was unable to restart the engine I declared an emergency and was cleared to land on runway xxl or runway xy. I elected to land on runway xy. The landing was completed safely and there was no damage to the aircraft or airport property; also no one on board was injured. The aircraft was towed to a maintenance facility for evaluation.
