Request from ZZZ for climb to FL370 to avoid line of thunderstorms or deviation 100 mi west of course was denied. Deviation up to 40 mi west of course was approved. Declared an emergency on guard 121.5 and offset and climbed to FL370 to avoid the tops which had previously been reported near FL340.
