Narrative:
Attempting to park the aircraft at gate; the stop lights were turned off before arriving on the stopping spot causing an overshoot by approximately 1 ft. Passenger were ordered back into their seats and the aircraft was towed backwards about 1 ft. I asked the mechanic to come and talk to us after the flight was complete and he agreed to do so twice. Mechanic never showed up. Another mechanic came to the cockpit to through-flight the aircraft and we conversed about this unsafe procedure. The mechanic explained that the ymml airport authority/authorized direct them to turn off the parking system if they feel that the aircraft will overshoot the parking spot. This is a dangerous procedure as the captain has no indication as to when he should stop the aircraft and could cause damage and/or injury. The parking system needs to not be turned off until the aircraft is stopped.

Title: ACR CAPT REPORTS YMML GROUND CREW TURNING OFF AUTO PARK SYSTEM AS A MEANS TO INDICATE STOP NOW.
Narrative: ATTEMPTING TO PARK THE ACFT AT GATE; THE STOP LIGHTS WERE TURNED OFF BEFORE ARRIVING ON THE STOPPING SPOT CAUSING AN OVERSHOOT BY APPROX 1 FT. PAX WERE ORDERED BACK INTO THEIR SEATS AND THE ACFT WAS TOWED BACKWARDS ABOUT 1 FT. I ASKED THE MECH TO COME AND TALK TO US AFTER THE FLT WAS COMPLETE AND HE AGREED TO DO SO TWICE. MECH NEVER SHOWED UP. ANOTHER MECH CAME TO THE COCKPIT TO THROUGH-FLT THE ACFT AND WE CONVERSED ABOUT THIS UNSAFE PROC. THE MECH EXPLAINED THAT THE YMML ARPT AUTH DIRECT THEM TO TURN OFF THE PARKING SYS IF THEY FEEL THAT THE ACFT WILL OVERSHOOT THE PARKING SPOT. THIS IS A DANGEROUS PROC AS THE CAPT HAS NO INDICATION AS TO WHEN HE SHOULD STOP THE ACFT AND COULD CAUSE DAMAGE AND/OR INJURY. THE PARKING SYS NEEDS TO NOT BE TURNED OFF UNTIL THE ACFT IS STOPPED.
