Narrative:

During cruise nwbound at FL340; we received a cabin call concerning smoke and a loud pop noise in the aft galley. I was the PF and the first officer was the PNF. The smoke and associated smell indicated an electrical fire. Galley power was turned off by the flight attendants. Smoke and smell started to dissipate somewhat; and the fire extinguishers were brought into aft galley (not fired). I asked first officer to switch to PF duties plus radio while I handled the problem. I asked that the relief pilot; already on break; examine the situation and report back to the cockpit. In the meantime the first officer and I looked for cockpit indications of a problem (none); reviewed the smoke/fumes/fire electrical checklist (applicable items already completed); pulled up WX for ZZZZ1 and ZZZZ2; pulled out divert checklist; and readied the satphone for dispatch/maintenance control call. The relief pilot reported back that smoke had dissipated somewhat; electrical smoke smell remained; and all electrical power was off in the left aft galley. We contacted dispatch and maintenance control; discussed the situation and agreed that a divert to ZZZZ1 was necessary. An emergency was declared with ATC and divert to ZZZZ1 begun. We checked landing data and determined an overweight landing (no fuel dump) was a safe option. It was an uneventful approach and a smooth landing was accomplished. Fire trucks reported no smoke coming from aircraft or wheel assemblies. Maintenance found aft galley far right coffee maker had suffered a short and had been the source of the galley smoke and loud pop sound.

THE RELIEF PLT RPTED BACK THAT SMOKE HAD DISSIPATED SOMEWHAT; ELECTRICAL SMOKE SMELL REMAINED; AND ALL ELECTRICAL PWR WAS OFF IN THE L AFT GALLEY. WE CONTACTED DISPATCH AND MAINT CTL; DISCUSSED THE SITUATION AND AGREED THAT A DIVERT TO ZZZZ1 WAS NECESSARY. AN EMER WAS DECLARED WITH ATC AND DIVERT TO ZZZZ1 BEGUN. WE CHKED LNDG DATA AND DETERMINED AN OVERWT LNDG (NO FUEL DUMP) WAS A SAFE OPTION. IT WAS AN UNEVENTFUL APCH AND A SMOOTH LNDG WAS ACCOMPLISHED. FIRE TRUCKS RPTED NO SMOKE COMING FROM ACFT OR WHEEL ASSEMBLIES. MAINT FOUND AFT GALLEY FAR R COFFEE MAKER HAD SUFFERED A SHORT AND HAD BEEN THE SOURCE OF THE GALLEY SMOKE AND LOUD POP SOUND.
